In May of 1969, The 5th Dimension released their fourth album, The Age of Aquarius, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200. One song from the album, Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In, was a medley of two songs written for the 1967 musical, Hair.
The 5th Dimension found inspiration in this controversial off-Broadway musical. It offered culture shock to traditional theatre and would define the "rock musical" genre. The group’s medley of its songs released as a single spent six weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA.
